Position: School Social Worker

Sophia Academy is a small independent school for 5-8th-grade girls from low-income homes in Providence, Rhode Island. Founded in 2001, Sophia Academy is changing lives of girls from low-income homes through an empowering middle school education.
Overall Responsibility: Clinical work with students is designed to address social, emotional, and behavioral issues that can impact academic performance and success.

Clinical Responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting timely assessments of student emotional needs for academic success by reviewing student I.E.P.’s, faculty and staff referrals, and through classroom observations.
  • Providing short-term counseling for students utilizing a strengths-based, gender-specific model to address issues impacting academic performance
  • Developing appropriate action plans as needed in conjunction with Director of Student Support as outlined in the student handbook.
  • Serve as a member of the crisis intervention team; provide direct services when appropriate in a timely manner in accordance with Sophia Academy Crisis Protocol.
  • Consulting with school personnel with respect to students or situations which are not referred to the social worker for direct service.
  • Providing family intervention, including home visits, and referrals as needed for student success.
  • Serving as a liaison between students, parents, and school personnel (admin, faculty, and staff). Advocating on behalf of students and their families as needed.
  • Facilitating student social/emotional support groups (i.e. 5th or 6th-grade lunch bunch) as needed.
  • Facilitating parent support group- for parents or caregivers (a variety of groups are possible, Moms of Adolescents, Survivors of Abuse, etc.) as needed.
  • Communicate information about existing or organizing workshops pertaining to awareness/health: Self-Esteem, Parenting, Time Management, Disease Prevention, Sexuality, and Teens, etc. as needed.
  • Ongoing professional development to expand knowledge of clinical issues that affect the students.
  • Weekly clinical supervision provided by Director of Student Support.
  • Adherence to National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics.

Administrative Responsibilities will include:

  • Ongoing professional development to expand knowledge of clinical issues that affect the students.

  • Completing reports in a timely manner.
  • Conducting program evaluations.
  • Attending regularly scheduled Teacher Support Team meetings
  • Weekly nonclinical supervision with the Assistant Head of School.
  • Assisting development office by providing program information for grants or special events which promote the school
  • Lending a hand as needed, as a member of small staff of an independent school, with general tasks which keep the school running smoothly.

Job Qualifications

  • Two years clinical experience necessary with children and families, preferably in an urban school setting.
  • A desire to work with middle school students and young adults.
  • Masters in Social Work preferred, licensed or qualified for licensing
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Knowledge of and experience using DSM V
  • Proficiency or fluency in Spanish a plus.
  • Commitment to gender specific, feminist empowerment model for girls and women.
  • Creative and flexible in their approaches.
  • Complete a National background check

Substitute Teacher

Job Description
Position: Substitute Teacher
Supervisor: Head of School
Employee Type: Temporary, as needed basis

Job Summary
The substitute is responsible for teaching 5-8th-grade advisor. The substitute is expected to fulfill all duties associated with full-time faculty members. The substitute teacher is expected to work regular school hours: 7:45 AM – 3:30 PM and attend weekly faculty meetings on Wednesday’s from 3:30 – 5:00 PM.

Essential Duties

  • Overlap teaching responsibilities with the classroom teacher.
  • Teach current program content and skills to grades 5-8.
  • Take on a weekly lunch and recess duty.


  • Masters in Teaching preferred
  • Rhode Island Elementary or Secondary Certification preferred
  • Teaching experience /with adolescent girls, and/or low-income communities preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and own transportation.
  • Completed BCI with fingerprints with favorable results.
