Community
Throughout the year, Sophia students and faculty gather with families and other friends of the school to connect us to one another, to our values, and to the wider world.
Rituals:
Founders Day: We celebrate the founding of Sophia Academy on September 28 each year. Our founder, Sister Mary Reilly, attends this assembly and welcomes each new student individually.
Thanksgiving: The eighth grade leads this ceremony of gratitude.
Winter Solstice: On or around the first day of winter, our community gathers in a celebration of unity and light, and shares the story of the changing seasons.
Eighth Grade Farewell: Graduating eighth graders appreciate one another at a family potluck and put on a talent show for the Sophia community.
Graduation: Families gather with faculty to celebrate and graduate our eighth graders as they leave Sophia and head to high school.
Stepping Stones: Students in grades 5 through 7 participate in a moving up ritual as they prepare to take their place in the next grade.
All-School Assemblies:
All-School Assemblies are held monthly for special presentations by students, faculty, staff, or guests; important topics are discussed; announcements or opportunities are shared. Recent assemblies included:
A panel on women and leadership hosted by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and featuring four dynamic women sharing the stories of their journeys
An eighth-grade led presentation on women artists who have changed the world: Yoko Ono, Judy Chicago, Jenny Holzer, Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keefe, Jennifer Bartlett, and Faith Ringold
A storytelling assembly led by Akeem Lloyd and friends from A Leadership Journey
