Welcome to Sophia Academy!
Sophia Academy provides an incredible opportunity for middle school girls from low income families to grow, learn, and thrive in an independent school environment created especially with them in mind. From our social justice based, trauma informed curriculum to a robust schedule of field trips, both locally and nationally, to rich, diverse after-school and extracurricular offerings, Sophia girls are challenged to succeed in a rigorous, holistic academic program while being wholly supported by dedicated, talented educators.
At Sophia, we recognize that education is the key to opening doors. We prime our students to tackle whatever challenges they may face in a society where young girls, particularly young Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) girls from low income households, are often not centered. Here they learn in a space which honors their inherent wisdom and worth, teaches them that they have incredible potential to change the world in a myriad of positive ways, and holds them at the center of every conversation and every decision. Here they are surrounded by positive role models; many of the adults who make up our teaching faculty and staff are women of color, several grew up in the very neighborhoods from which our girls hail. Here Sophia girls learn to love school, to value community and dedicate themselves to deep involvement both locally and nationally, and to cherish the bond they create with their Sophia sisters and extended family of alumnae, mentors, community partners, board members, and other friends of Sophia.
I am honored to be a part of this incredible learning community, and I invite you to visit us and see firsthand the wonders of a Sophia Academy education and to marvel at the joy that bubbles up on a daily basis as we continually work to honor our mission and achieve our vision.
