8th Grade Urban Essays
In early 2021, Sophia Academy’s 8th Grade learned and practiced the elements of photography: light, color, rule of thirds, pattern, closeup, point of view, contrast, leading line, curves and framing.
The students looked at the photographic essays of award- winning artist, LaToya Ruby Frazier. Their assignment was to apply the elements and each student tell their personal story during the pandemic of 2020 with photography.
These photographs represent the stories of their neighborhoods, their family life, their heritage and how 2020, the year of COVID-19 pandemic, affected their worlds... Enjoy!
7th Grade Wire Sculptures
The seventh grade studied the use of wire in sculpture. Through the exhibition lens of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, students looked at the work of Alexander Calder, who pioneered the use of wire in his sculptures, as well as those influenced by him: Robin Wight, David Oliveira and Tomohiro Inaba. Using sculptural wire, the students experimented with tools and techniques for making 2D portraits (pictured) and 3D sculptures of hands.
6th Grade Shibori Dyeing
The 6th Grade has been studying the history of textiles through weaving, dyeing and printing beginning with the ancient Asian methods that led to the Silk Road. We studied the Silk Road and its affect on textiles from Africa to Europe and the Americas and then explored the textiles of Asian, Africa and Central America.
One ancient method of dyeing originated in what is known as Japan today. It is called Shibori and was the inspiration for modern day tye-dying. Authentic shibori uses indigo dye and various methods for achieving desired patterns.
Sophia students made their own Shibori cloth with the traditional indigo color dye and three distance learning students used other natural materials to create natural looking dyes and colors.
