6th Grade Shibori Dyeing

The 6th Grade has been studying the history of textiles through weaving, dyeing and printing beginning with the ancient Asian methods that led to the Silk Road.  We studied the Silk Road and its affect on textiles from Africa to Europe and the Americas, and then explored the textiles of Asian, Africa and Central America.

One ancient method of dyeing originated in what is known as Japan today.  Called Shibori, it is the inspiration for modern day tye-dying.  Authentic shibori uses indigo dye and various methods for achieving desired patterns.

Sophia students made their own Shibori cloth with the traditional indigo color dye and three distance learning students used other natural materials to create natural looking dyes and colors.
