Sophia Hosts RI Women in Leadership Panel

Sophia Academy was proud to host a special panel discussion entitled “No Limits” on Friday, November 22, 2020. The panel, sponsored by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, highlighted four local women whose hard work and determination have led them to overcoming obstacles and pursuit of their career dreams. The diverse group of women demonstrate the core values of Sophia Academy, and are dedicated contributors in their communities.

Sophia students enjoyed hearing the diverse career paths and encouragements of Ting Barnard, owner of Ting Barnard’s Studio, Aleita Hall, Senior Project Manager at Gilbane Building Company, Michelle Carnevale, Grant Program Director at 11th Hour Racing, and Yvette Mendez, Deputy Director, External Affairs, Rhode Island Department of Health. Head of School Maura Farrell moderated the discussion using questions prepared by Sophia students ahead of time.

Ms. Farrell impressed upon the students that “One of the things we want you to learn while you are at Sophia Academy is that you have both the right and responsibility to pursue your dreams and to be a leader”. Hearing the stories of women like Ms. Barnard, Ms. Hall, Ms Carnevale and Ms. Mendez not only inspire but challenge Sophia students to learn, try new things and continue to discover new pathways. Thank you to all who participated!
